Description:
Mountain Knot Grass is a perennial herb, it is a woody, prostrate or succulent, perennial herb in the Amaranthaceae family of the genus Aerva The whole plant, especially the leaves, is edible. The leaves are commonly used in soup or eaten as a spinach or as a vegetable.

This herb is described as one of the best known remedies for bladder and kidney stones. Ayurvedic practitioners recommend a decoction of the plant to be taken internally for a few days to dissolves the stone and to clear the urinary path. 

Aerva Lanata medicinal benefits
Aerva Lanata is a good herbal cure for stones in Urinary Bladder and Kidney. Description:
Dronapushpi is Sanskrit name of plant Leucas cephalotes. It is a medicinal herb that grows as a weed in India and many South East Asian countries. The folk use of this herb is for treating scorpion stings, snake bite, cough, fever etc. The whole plant has fever educing and insecticidal properties. The leaves are applied externally on snake bites and scorpion stings.

Part used: leaves and flowers

Traditional medicinal uses
It has antimicrobial, insecticidal, fever reducing, larvicidal and inflammation reducing properties. It is useful in skin diseases. In malarial fever, the leaves juice is given. In some part of country, the decoction of whole plant is used for curing fever. The juice removes toxins from body. The leaves juice is applied externally for skin diseases and swelling. In cold and cough, the leaves juice is recommended.

Scorpion sting
In scorpion sting the plant is used internally as well externally. The leaves juice (few drops) is mixed with honey and taken orally. Topically, the leaves juice is applied on place of sting.

Snake bite
The folk remedy is to put few drops of whole plant in nostrils.

Skin diseases, removing blood toxins
Skin diseases mainly occur due to toxins in blood. Dronapushpi plant has ability to flush the toxins from body. In skin diseases, whole plant of Dronapushpi is used. The plant is dried. Five grams of dried powder is taken with three grams Neem/Margosa leaves in 2 glass water. This is boiled till volume reduce to one fourth. Then it filtered and taken two times a day.

Abnormally heavy bleeding at menstruation
The leaves of plant are taken a handful. These are washed and then ground to make fine paste. This paste is mixed with lemon juice and sesame oil/til oil (edible). The preparation is eaten empty stomach every morning for a week.

Asthma, cold, cough
The leaves juice of plant is taken in dose of 1-3 teaspoons.

Excessive thirst
The flowers (2 tablespoon) are boiled in water (150 ml) till volume reduces to half. This is filtered and taken thrice a day.

Cough, leucorrhoea
The leaves of plant are cooked and eaten with rice.

Cough, congestion, blockage of nose, headache due to cough, Sinusitis, Migraine, Phlegm
The juice of leaves is put in nostrils as drops. For this purpose, the leaves juice is extracted and mixed with two times water. Then the diluted juice is put in nostrils (4 dops) for 3-4 days. The flowers are heated in til/sesame oil and applied on head.

Fever (acute, chronic), Allergy
The decoction of plant (2-3 grams in boiled in two glass water till water reduces to one fourth) is used

Caution:

This medicinal herb should be used in recommended doses only. It is hot in potency and heats up body. Avoid its use in excess. The leaves juice can be diluted for putting in nose of oral use.

Description
Bharngi (Clerodendrum serratum) is woody shrub which is native to tropical and warm temperate regions and found throughout India up to an altitude of 1500m. In Sanskrit meaning of Bharangee is glorious. Its tree has height of about 2 to 8 feet. Its root, stem and leaves are use for medicinal purpose. In India this plant is easily available in regions like Himalayan region, Bhopal, Bengal and Bihar. Red loam soils are best for the growth of this herb.

Bharangi is oldest herb used in ayurvedic system which is very famous for healthy respiratory system and to give good rhythm to voice. Its common names are glory bower, bag flower and bleeding heart. Leaves are used to increase appetite and also have expectoration activities. Its roots have liver protecting, antipyretic and anti-inflammatory activities. In some part of India its root is used to treat Jaundice. Its flowers resemble to lotus. Bharangi was discovered by rishi "Bhrigu" thousands of years back.

In Ayurveda Bharangee is indicated for respiratory problems and used in preparation of various Ayurvedic drugs for curing the same. It has pungent, astringent in taste and hot in potency. It is useful in cough, breathlessness, wound, swelling, liver problems and neurological disorders. The decoction prepared from its leaves has bronchodilator activities.

Bharangi is not a toxic plant. Its leaves and flowers can be eaten in form of vegetable.

Common medicinal Benefits:
Decoction of leaves acts as bronchodilator and mucolytic in nature and it is used to break down phlegm and extra mucus and eases it out from body.

Paste of bharangi leaves are used in lymphadenopathy.

Root of this herb is used to treat jaundice and various disorders associated with liver.

It is helpful in the pacification of vata dosha and it is useful in rheumatic conditions, gout and joint pain.

Bharangi has anti-microbial properties and it is used in various worm infestations.

It act as appetizer and used to stimulate digestive fire.

Root paste of bharangi applied on forehead relieves headaches.

Decoction of this herb is used to cure cyst, raktagulam and uterine fibroids.

Paste of leaves are applied on wounds and ulcers to extract out extra pus and relieve burning sensation. It is also helpful in the quick healing of abscesses.

It is also used to cure abdominal tumors.

It has anti-inflammatory properties and used to reduce inflammation.

It pacifies vata and kapha roga.

Medicinal uses of Bharngi
Here are few remedies that can be done at home using Bharangi. These are based on its traditional use all across country

Asthma, bronchitis
Prepare decoction of its root and drink twice a day for three days to get relief from cough, asthma and bronchitis.

Liver problem
Prepare decoction of its root (1/2 teaspoon) and drink twice a day for three days to cure liver problems.

Tuberculosis
Prepare decoction of Bharangi panchang (all five part of plant) and take twice a day.

Headache, migraine
Grind roots of Bharangi and apply on forehead for few hours. This gives relief in headache.

For eye problems
Grind leaves of Bharangi and make poultice. Apply this poultice on eyes.

Thyroid problem, galgand rog (Mumps), goitre
Wash and dry roots of Bharangi. Grind to make powder. Take thus prepared churna (3 gm) with Trikatu churna (3 gm) twice a day with lukewarm powder.

Cyst, fibroid in uterus, raktagulm
Prepare decoction of Bharangi panchang (3gm), add few drops of mustard oil in water. Take twice a day.

Stomach problems

Prepare powder of its seed and take frequently in small doses.

Description:
Phyla Nodiflora is a flowering, broadleaf plant native to South America. It is grows in a groundcover or turflike manner, and is often present in yards. The inflorescence consists of a purple-coloured centre encircled by small white-to-pink flowers. The flower takes on a match-like look, which is why the plant is called matchweed. The leaf arrangement is opposite. Each leaf has one to seven teeth on each edge starting at the widest point and continuing to the tip.

Medicinal Benefits of Phyla Nodiflora

For Leucorrhoea mix dried leaf powder of Phyla Nodiflora with Cumin seed powder in 2:1 ratio. Take 4g of the mixture with lukewarm water once a day.

For Piles, Chew 2-3 leaves of Phyla Nodiflora twice a day.

For Skin, Use leaf paste of Phyla Nodiflora on the infected Skin or Ulcers. It helps in the ripening of Ulcers.

Phyla Nodiflora helps to get rid of dandruff, Grind leaves of Phyla Nodiflora to make paste. Apply it on scalp and hair. Wash after 2 hours.

பெண்களை பெரிதும் மன உளைச்சலுக்கு ஆளாக்கும் நோயில் வெள்ளைப்படுதலும் ஒன்று. இந்த பாதிப்புக்கு உள்ளானவர்கள் பொடுதலையை நிழலில் உலர்த்தி பொடி செய்து தினமும் காலையில் 1 தேக்கரண்டி பொடியுடன் தேன் கலந்து சாப்பிட்டு வரவேண்டும். அல்லது காலை, மாலை இருவேளையும் கஷாயம் செய்து சாப்பிட்டு வந்தால் வெள்ளைப்படுதல் குணமாகும்.

நூறு கிராம் பொடுதலை இலையைஅரை டம்பளர் நீரிலிட்டுகாய்ச்சி கால்பாகம் சுண்டின பின் வடிகட்டி அதை இரண்டு பங்காக்கி காலை, மாலை குடித்து வர சிறுநீரிலுள்ள இனிப்பை மாற்றும். இக்கஷாயத்துடன் வால்மிளகு, சூரணம் சேர்த்து குடித்துவர சிறுநீரக நீர்த்தாரைப்புண், அதனால் ஏற்படும் வெள்ளைப் படுதல் குணமாகும்.

முடி இருப்பவர்களுக்கு எல்லாம் பொடுகு ஒரு பெரும் பிரச்சனையாகும். பொடுகு உள்ளவர்களுக்கு முடி உதிரும், எத்தனை தைலங்கள் தேய்த்தாலும் குணமாகாது. பொடுதலை 150 கிராம், தோலுரித்த சின்ன வெங்காயம் 250 கிராம், வெந்தயம் 50 கிராம் மூன்றையும் இடித்து இரும்பு வாணலியில் ஒரு லிட்டர் தேங்காய் எண்ணெய்விட்டு அதில் மேற்படி சரக்கை கலந்து சிறு தீயில் எரிக்கவும். நீர் சுண்டி தீயாமல் மிதக்கும் பக்குவத்தில் இறக்கி, ஆறவிட்டு வடிகட்டி பத்திரப்படுத்தவும், இதை தினமும் தேங்காய் எண்ணெய்க்கு பதிலாக தலையில் தேய்த்து தலைவாரிக் கொள்ள வேண்டும்.

பொடுகுக்கு மேற்பூச்சு மட்டும் முழு பலனளிக்காது. உள்ளுக்கும் பொடுதலை இலைகளை நெய்விட்டு வதக்கி, புளி, உப்பு, மிளகாய் போட்டு சேர்த்து துவையல் செய்து சாப்பிட பொடுகு குணமாகும்.

சிலருக்கு வாயுவினாலோ அல்லது ஏதேனும் அடிபட்டாலோ விரைப்பையில் வீக்கம் உண்டாகும். இவர்கள் பொடுதலையை மைபோல் அரைத்து வீக்கம் உண்டான பகுதியில் பற்று போட்டால் விரைவீக்கம் குறையும்.

சில பெண்களுக்கு கருப்பை வலுவில்லாமல் இருப்பதால் கருச்சிதைவு உண்டாகும். இவர்கள் பொடுதலையை உணவில் அடிக்கடி சேர்த்துக் கொண்டால் கருப்பை வலுப்பெறும்.

பொடுதலை இலைகளைப் பிழிந்து சாறு எடுத்து, நல்லெண்ணெய் சேர்த்து தலையில் தேய்த்து ஊறிய பின் குளித்து வந்தால் தலையிலுள்ள சொறி, சிரங்கு குறையும்..

வயிற்று உபாதைகள் நீங்க
பொடுதலையை நிழலில் உலர்த்தி பொடியாக்கி வைத்துக்கொண்டு, காலை, மாலை என இருவேளையும் கஷாயம் செய்து இரண்டு நாட்களுக்கு அருந்தி வந்தால் வயிற்று உபாதைகள் நீங்கும்.

Description:
Trianthema decandra is annual, prostrate, succulent, glabrous herb with slightly branched, long, angular stems and internodes 2.5- 9.5 cm long, occurring as a weed all over peninsular India. It is an annual herb found growing as a weed in rainy season. As it appears from the ground on occurrence of rain and hence named as Varshabhu in Sanskrit.

The whole plant of Trianthema decandra is edible and used medicinally. The roots are aperient (mild purgative or laxative) and is useful in hepatitis and asthma. It is given with milk for orchitis (inflammation of one or both of the testicles). The juice of the leaf is dropped into the nostrils to relieve migraine.

Varshabhu is used in India for treatment of variety of ailments. It is used as a single drug in form of dried powder or decoction for jaundice, liver diseases, anemia, cough, headaches, epilepsy, odema etc.  As the whole plant possess diuretic indicated in anasarca, cystitis in case of dribbling of urine, in dropsy, edema and ascites.  Decoction of plant is given for fever, rheumatism, and as an antidote for alcohol poisoning.

For Abdominal gas
The leaves are boiled and given.

For Cathartic
The roots are used.

For Epilepsy
Snuff of plant is used.

For Headache, migraine, hemicrania
The juice of leaves is dropped in each nostril.

To regularising periods
The decoction of leaves is given.

For Rheumatism, edema
The decoction of plant is used.

For Ulcers, itching, poor eyesight and night blindness
The root paste is applied.

Other Uses
Whole plant is eaten as a vegetable.

Warnings of side effects
It is hot in nature, so should be used with caution in summer and by hot temperament individuals and menstruating women. Avoid during pregnancy.

It has diuretic and laxative action. In larger doses, it causes vomiting.

Description
Boerhaavia Diffusa is a flowering plant that is commonly known as punarnava which means rejuvenating or renewing the body. The other common names of the plant are tarvine, spreading hogweed and red spiderling. This herbal medicine is used to relieve pain and the leaves are used as a green vegetable in numerous parts of India.

Punarnava is a very important medicinal herb of Ayurveda. Its name is derived from two words, Punar (= once again /regaining/restoring) and Nava (=new, renew or young), so the literal meaning of the name is, one which becomes new or young again. This name signifies the rejuvenating property of Punarnava. It is a Rasayan herb of Ayurveda which renews the body or restores youth.

This widely dispersed plant is found all throughout India, southern parts of United States and the Pacific. The plant has small fruits which are sticky and grow only a few inches above the ground.  This herb is a weed that grows widely in across India. It is a creeper that usually grows up to the height of 2 to 3 meters. It has pink colored flowers and green colored oval shaped fruits. The herb had been noticed by villagers for bringing back to life a dead plant thus giving it the name of ‘The Renewer’. It is known to rejuvenate the cells of the body and eliminate excessive water from it. These benefits of the Boerhaavia Diffusa make it highly advantageous for the kidney and liver

Punarnava is diuretic used to treat urinary problems, very good for liver and very effective in jaundice and urolithiasis. This is tonic for heart, liver and kidney.

Whole plant or the roots of Punarnava are used along with other ingredients for the preparation of medicines for anemia, jaundice, asthma, cough, colic, enlargement of liver, piles, abdominal worms, acute leprosy, heart disease, fistula, blood and skin diseases, anasarca, liver and spleen diseases, strangury, retention of urine, etc. It is taken along with Gokhru for kidney disorders. It enhances antibody response and reduces Pitta and Kapha.

The leaves and roots of plant are eaten as vegetable for better health. The plant is cooling and helps to reduce excessive heat in body.

For medicinal purpose the juice, decoction, infusion, powder or paste of plant is used. During rainy season the plant is abundantly available and can be used fresh.


Ayurvedic Properties and Medicinal uses
In Ayurveda, Punarnava refers to the dried, matured whole plant of Boerhaavia diffusa. This medicinal herb is used since ancient times to treat various ailments. The mention of plant is found in Charaka Samhita, and Sushruta Samhita.

Asthma, bronchitis, menstrual problems
Root decoction is given twice a day for one month. Or Powder of the root is given in doses of 5 grams thrice a day. Or Dried plant powder is smoked as a cigarette once day for one month. Or Root powder 3 grams + Turmeric half gram, consumed twice a day.

Blisters, ulcers
Paste of roots + milk, is applied topically.

Body heat, scanty urination, swelling of legs
The plant / root powder is taken for one week.

Burning urination
Whole plant of Punarnava + seeds of Gokhru / Tribulus terrestris + Puttura / Aerva lanata are made into a decoction and given internally.

Dengue fever, malaria
Punarnava + Giloy decoction is given. 

Dropsy (Edema), ascites, Oedema during pregnancy, Anasarca (generalized body swelling)
Punarnava produces diuresis in cases of oedema and ascites, especially due to liver, peritoneal and kidney ailments. The fresh boiled herb should be given or liquid extract of the fresh or dry plant can be given in doses of 4 to 6 grams. Or
Punarnava leaves vegetable is consumed to reduce edema.

Decreased urine production
Root decoction is given with sugar and milk at night after food.

Diarrhea
Root powder is given to stop diarrhea.

Energy tonic
Root powder 3 grams + milk is taken.

Eye diseases
Root paste with fresh milk is applied. Or Root paste + Ghee, is applied in eyes to reduce swelling.

Heart Diseases
The leaves are eaten as vegetable.

Hydrocele
Root paste is applied topically to treat Hydrocele.

Induce vomiting
The roots are consumed in large dose (above 5 grams).

Insomnia / Sleeplessness, jaundice, kidney diseases
The decoction of whole plant is taken in dose of 50-100ml.

Inflammatory conditions, rashes, urticaria
Root powder 1 teaspoon + Sonth dry ginger 1 gram, is given.

Improving appetite
Root powder is taken in dose of 3 grams.

Laxative, Diuretic
Punarnava root powder/ decoction is given.

Leucorrhoea, spermatorrhoea
The root powder in a dose of 500 mg, twice daily for 15 days is given.

Prostrate problems
Take root powder 4 grams with hot water.

Rejuvenation
The paste or decoction of the leaves and roots is given. According to Ashtaanga Hridaya, the paste of Punarnavaa (20 g) is taken with milk daily.

Rheumatism
Whole plant decoction is given.

Sore throat
Leaves juice is given.

Skin diseases
A paste of the root can be applied on oedematous swellings.

Stomach ache, colitis
Two tea spoonful extract of Whole plant of Punarnava + one tea spoonful of honey, is given twice a day. Or A powder of the root is given in doses of 5 grams thrice a day.

Swelling
Root powder is taken in dose of 3 grams with Go mutra.

To increase lactation
Boil half teaspoon roots in cup of milk. Filter and drink.

Ulcers, abscesses
A hot poultice of the root can be applied.

Worms

Root decoction is given. Or A powder of the root is given in doses of 5 grams thrice a day.
